Growing Guide
Planting
Plant Milk Thistle in full sun in well-drained soil. It can be grown in herb beds, borders, wildlife gardens, or larger containers.
Care
Milk Thistle is a hardy and drought-tolerant plant once established. Water regularly during the early growth stage but avoid overly wet soil.
Harvesting
Seeds are typically harvested in late summer when the flower heads dry. The seeds are the most commonly used part in herbal preparations. Seeds can be finely ground using a coffee grinder to produce a powder, which may then be infused into olive oil. As silymarin is highly fat-soluble and poorly soluble in water, preparing it as a tea would provide limited benefit.
Garden Tip
Allowing a few plants to flower provides valuable nectar for pollinators, while collecting seeds ensures you can continue growing Milk Thistle year after year.
