COMMON NAME: Ashwagandha, Indian Ginseng, Winter Cherry
LATIN NAME: Withania somnifera
DESCRIPTION: Half-hardy perennial evergreen, native to the dry regions of Asia. Grows up to 60cm high, forming a dense shrub with pale green silver leaves and small yellow flowers maturing into husks with red berries inside. Providing shelter and food for pollinators and ornamental element to any garden.
SEED ORIGIN: Ireland
SOWING: Soak the berries to break the outer shell and remove the seeds. Sow in seed compost in early spring indoors. Thin out the seedlings leaving plenty of space for root development. Once the temperature warms enough (around May) transplant into a final growing spot in a green house (to grow as a perennial) or a sheltered sunny spot outside (for annual crop).
GROWING CONDITIONS: Requires warm sheltered position with full sun and rich, well-draining soil.
USES: Mature roots are used for their apoptogenic properties
